What sort of discipline or disciplinary procedures exist at LearningLeaders?

While LearningLeaders is not a school that students attend on a daily basis, we still maintain high expectations of student, coach, and parent conduct.

While LearningLeaders is not a school that students attend on a daily basis, we still maintain high expectations of student, coach, and parent conduct.  As one of our core values is Prioritize People's Potential, we feel respecting all members of a learning environment is critical for the success of everyone.  Disruptions such as refusing to participate, coming to practices unprepared, disrespecting other students or coaches, vandalizing the physical environment, or using foul language are not tolerated.  Students may be asked to leave the program if they are not able to adjust their behavior after warnings from the coach.

In order to maintain a safe and productive educational environment, it is necessary for students to comply with the rules and guidelines set forth in the course syllabus. There are a few specific behaviors that threaten the learning environment of the students and coaches that will not be tolerated. These include:

  1. Refusing to participate in lesson activities and debates. If students refuse to participate in lesson activities and/or debates, this will have a negative impact on other students. The value of the course for each individual student is dependent on the participation of all others as debate is an essentially interactive activity. A necessary requirement of being part of the program is participation. We do not expect everyone to be perfect, we simply ask that everyone try their best.
  2. Disrespecting the learning process. If students routinely come to lesson unprepared, without having completed their work on the Online Learning Center, or without having prepared for debates, it negatively impacts the experience of all other students. We expect students to come prepared and to try their best to achieve excellence. We understand there are busy times for students during the season during which they may not have as much time to prepare. However, consistently coming unprepared is not acceptable.
  3. Disrespecting other team members. Public speaking and debate often places students in vulnerable positions because they must stand in front of their peers, speak, and be subject to critical analysis. For this reason we absolutely cannot tolerate laughing at, mocking, or ridiculing other students. We also cannot tolerate routine disruptions of other students.
  4. Disrespecting coaches. The coaches will do their best to empower students to acquire valuable lifelong skills. In each practice session students will engage in a debate or give a public speech. The coaches will provide positive constructive feedback to all students. We expect students, even if they do not agree with this criticism, to listen attentively and respect the feedback of the coach. Routine interruptions of the coach, laughing at, or mocking the coach will not be tolerated.
  5. Disrespecting physical space. We cannot tolerate any destruction of material in the LearningCenter. This includes writing on or carving on desks, writing on walls or damaging any other material in the space.
  6. Foul language. We seek to help students cultivate a rich and sophisticated vocabulary with which to express their ideas. We do not tolerate the use of swear words or mature language where it is not academically called for.

If we find that students are exhibiting any of the above behaviors we will issue a warning letter to the family identifying the behavior. If, after this warning, we do not see improvements in behavior, we will ask the student to leave the program. If we find that students are exhibiting behavior that borders on any of the behaviors described above, we will let the parent know in private conversation and/or in the parent coach conference.
